Did I tell you… (and a contest!)

…about my friend Joan’s awesome fiber company? I haven’t? Geez, I really need to blog more.

Photo totally stolen from the Etsy listing – I can’t find the one I took!

You can see by the above photo why it is called The Cupcake Fiber Company. Each box of lovely fluffy goodness contains six 1oz batts that are packaged in such a way to resemble a box of cupcakes. How awesome is that?! Awesome. I know.

Joan sent me a box of this lovely fiber (oh dear, a very long time ago) before the shop even opened and I was blown away by the packaging and the idea behind it.  (I guess this is a good spot to put in my disclaimer: I didn’t purchase this box, it was sent to me for review – I purchased four other ones, though!) If you want two skeins of three-ply sock yarn, you spin three one ounce batts onto three bobbins and then ply them together. If you want one big skein, you spin two one ounce batts onto three bobbins and ply them together (which is what I did). All the measuring is done for you – so awesome. I’d like to mention that Joan’s preparation is flawless, no lumps or bumps to ruin your spinning. Those little balls of fluff are heavenly!

I spun my three bobbins with 2oz on each (usually I’d insert a photo here with a bobbin of singles but I cannot find one for the life of me – I know I took one but it’s disappeared) and once that was finished, I commenced the plying:

I was finally able to use my fancy 3-way Will Taylor kate the way it was intended! I usually ply from a center pull ball so I use the uprights to keep the ball of singles from getting all tangled.  After plying, I had a lovely bobbin of 3-ply:

After a bath and a thwack I had beautiful yarn:

Beautiful yarn that I am going to give to one lucky winner! If you’d like to win this 375ish yard skein of sport-ish weight handspun, go over to The Cupcake Fiber Company and favorite an item in their shop on Etsy, then come back here and tell me which item you favorited and you’ll be entered! Tell your friends and have them mention you and you’ll get another entry! If you decide that you just have to have some Cupcake Fiber of your very own, Joan has a 12% off discount code: TOUR12 for you to enter during checkout!

Contest will close tonight, Wednesday at 11pm EASTERN!  Winner will be chosen and posted Friday! Good luck!

ETA: Comments are now closed – thanks for playing! Winner will be posted on Friday, good luck!

Your skein looks very beautiful! I think I love the Voyage set the most… since I’m loving my blues right now again! lol All the colors are so pretty. Good luck to everyone! :-)

  2. That’s some fine looking yarn you’ve got there. I honestly don’t need any fiber and I’ve been resisting buying anything but this is mighty tempting. I favorited Big Blue Eyes but I know she has a blue that I like even better – I just don’t see it there right now.

I really love them all. I am very new to spinning. I favorites the gradient roses. Thank you. Your yarn is beautiful!

BFL & Silk Gradient Roses – oh my!! Love these colours. I’m enjoying your photos and your handspun is gorgeous.

  5. I don’t spin, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change anytime soon, but those little cupcake boxes of fluff are so incredibly gorgeous, aren’t they? I “like” the Cupcake Fiber Co. on FB and just love seeing those colorful boxes appear in my feed. *Sigh* Someday. Your yarn is so lovely!!

Ok it’s things like this that make me want to spin! I faved the gradient sunset but wow those are beautiful sets of fluff. The yarn you made from your box of cupcakes is deeeeliscious.

  8. It’s so hard to choose a favorite from all the beautiful fiber.. but my favorite is the Wander set in BFL/nylon that someone just bought!
And lovely spinning on your part :)

  9. Melissa says:

Ooooh, the Sunset Gradient would be lovely to spin! Thanks for making the introduction!

  10. Last Frost is drool-worthy and makes me want to break out my spinning wheel and play hooky. Going to repost your contest, my curly-headed friend. Love your three ply yarn and the lazy kate is pure genius.

  11. I love Joan’s fiber! I spun Leafy BFL/Silk last year, and it was so dreamy. I just faved Last Frost. I have wanted to try spinning a wool/tencel blend, and I think her fiber prep is the way I want to do it. I plan to spin my Royal BFL/Silk Cupcakes for the TdF.

  12. Lovely stuff! I adore the colors in Larkspur, but I really like the Grape Trio, too. Having colors for stripes or gradients all prepared like that is genius.

I just got my 1st order of Cupcakes yesterday…they are all incredibly awesome! The preparation is perfection…the BFL/silk blend is one of the softest fibers I have EVER felt…& that includes some of my angora & cashmere stash. Tough to chose just one favorite on her site, but out of what is there now, I favorited the Larkspur BFL/nylon combo. Beautiful colors. So happy I found Joan & her products!

  14. Dena says:

All of them are so lovely, but I favor the Larkspur. Can’t wait till payday so I can indulge in some woolly goodness! Thank you for turning us on to this really great company.

  15. No way. She’s your friend? I have been coveting the adorableness that is the Cupcake Fiber Company for ages. I favorited at least one colorway months ago. I have come close to purchasing a box many times, but until I spin more of the stash, no new fiber. :( Also, my boy broke my spinning stool. So, no comfortable spinning right now, which means no using the stash, which means no acquisitions. :(

I love the “Sunset” colorway in the SW BFL/nylon. (I’ve always wanted to try a BFL sock yarn!) This is such a cool idea!

  17. The cupcakes are great & you’ve totally done them justice with this yarn. I don’t want to win, on account of I’m making more yarn than I can knit already! I’ve been eyeing “Really” in the shop, but I’ve still got a couple of lovely boxes to spin up, so I guess I’ll wait until Joan posts something that blows me away before buying again ;)

  18. I have had my eyes on her batts for a while, and then Erin of Anatomy of Knitting spun some on her videocast. I faved Gradient Rose because I think that would be delightful as a long gradient, Navajo ply…. thanks for the contest opportunity!

Those are some lovely fiber batts. I particularly liked the Merino and Tencel- Last Frost batts but that was a tough decision to pick just one to favorite. I will certainly check this site out when I am looking for more batts.

Heide mentioned you on her blog, Serendipitous opportuknity. Grape sequence rings my chimes!

  21. Ann K. says:

I faved Big Blue Eyes. It has been on my radar for a few days along with Gradient Roses and Really. I love the blues and would love to spin Panda from a Batt. I located your contest from Joan, owner of Cupcake, and her group on Ravelry.
